Always put people first. Learn to do things right. The rest will follow.

Our education fails to teach us essentials for the workplace. We pick up things as we go, often with issues that turn into barriers that keep us from achieving our potential over time. A.K., the founder at Curae, gives talks and presentations to address these gaps.

    Always put people first

Not real. Companies, organizations, divisions, departments- all these are artificial constructs that can dissolve in a second. The only real things in all these are the people.

Most of us get lost in the make belief and lose sight of the people. The first step is to train ourselves to see people. See people, not cogs, not inputs, not resources, not headcount, not expense. With this view, we step towards empathy, we radiate warmth, and we live a richer life.

    Get the basics right

It is hard to get far without knowing how to write emails, run meetings, handle different personalities, and manage projects. These and a long list of things we should be taught in school but are not, even in advanced degree programs.

Becoming awesome at these things can give you an edge and shift your career trajectory up a few notches.

  • Success will follow, handle it well

Tossing aside humility at the first sign of meaningful accomplishment can set you back big time. Even if your company culture doesn’t penalize you for it, you do yourself a disservice by operating with a big ego and refusing to invest in higher self-awareness.

The other part of success is linked to the first point above- all those people who played a part in getting you where you are. Never let go of mentors or lose touch with valuable colleagues.
